Here’s a simple sourdough bread recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, water, flour, and salt. Mix together until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Let rest for one hour.
  3. Then perform 2 sets of stretch and fold space 30 min. apart. Wet hand with water to prevent sticking. Pick up dough on one side and stretch it over itself. Turn the bowl a quarter turn and repeat the process. Continue until all sides have been done. Dough should start to form into a tight ball.
  4. Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover it with a clean towel or saran wrap. Let it rise at room temperature for 6 to 8 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. After the first rise, shape the dough into a ball or loaf and place it into a floured proofing basket or bowl. Cover it with a towel and let it rise for another 1 to 2 hours.
  6. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). If you have a baking stone or dutch oven place it in the oven to preheat as well.
  7. Once the dough has finished its second rise, carefully transfer it onto the preheated baking stone or dutch oven lined with parchment paper. Slash the top of the dough with a sharp knife or razor blade.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes,
  9. Remove top of dutch oven and continue to bake until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
