Here’s a simple sourdough bread recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup water
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, water, flour, and salt. Mix together until a shaggy dough forms.
- Let rest for one hour.
- Then perform 2 sets of stretch and fold space 30 min. apart. Wet hand with water to prevent sticking. Pick up dough on one side and stretch it over itself. Turn the bowl a quarter turn and repeat the process. Continue until all sides have been done. Dough should start to form into a tight ball.
- Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover it with a clean towel or saran wrap. Let it rise at room temperature for 6 to 8 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- After the first rise, shape the dough into a ball or loaf and place it into a floured proofing basket or bowl. Cover it with a towel and let it rise for another 1 to 2 hours.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). If you have a baking stone or dutch oven place it in the oven to preheat as well.
- Once the dough has finished its second rise, carefully transfer it onto the preheated baking stone or dutch oven lined with parchment paper. Slash the top of the dough with a sharp knife or razor blade.
- Bake for 20 minutes,
- Remove top of dutch oven and continue to bake until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
